Maya Grace Misra is an artist, vexillologist, and activist currently living on unceded Kumeyaay territory. Born and raised in the California Bay Area with many formative years in New York City, her approach to both art and organizing work is deeply tied to her experiences as a white-passing South Asian American woman long accustomed to existing amongst multiple contradictory realities. Misra’s artistic research and underlying practice center around the role of cultural production— namely visual symbols and food media— in maintaining present-day systems of ritual blood sacrifice, white supremacy, and violence. Employing a variety of media such as photography, miniature painting, and video installation, Misra emphasizes the importance of interrogating and interrupting harmful systems, while encouraging the self-determination and empowerment of those most vulnerable. She graduated with a BFA in Studio Art from New York University in 2014, and earned her MFA degree in Visual Arts at UC San Diego in June 2020.
